Evolved Practice: Yoga Asana meets Movement Science

A Daylong Retreat with Alison Smith Starr

Your practice is meant to evolve. To support you in different ages and life stages. This daylong retreat will seamlessly weave strength and movement science into your yoga practice.

You’ll work hard and smart. You’ll do functional movement balanced by nervous system soothing. You’ll develop strong, calm, and control on your mat for off your mat.

Here's what you can look forward to:

Morning Session: Rooted & Resilient: Lower Body Leverage
A strong lower body is your support system. During this session, you’ll activate hamstrings, glutes, and pelvic floor for power. You’ll repattern your feet to stabilize ankles and knees. You’ll practice new things to make old favorites feel better than ever. Nervous system calibration will be sprinkled throughout practice so you feel refreshed, recharged, and ready for more.

Afternoon: Strong & Spacious: Upper Body Reset
With your lower body support system in place, you can release and reset your upper body. This session will build strength for better posture and create the space for it to stick. You'll learn the #1 posture mistake everyone makes (hint: it begins with pulling your shoulder back!) and the missing link to make posture effortless.
(PS: if your lower back hurts after shoulder stretches, backbends, or lots of sitting. You need this!)

Retreat Tuition: $265

Alison Smith Starr is known for her playful fire, inquisitive nature, and technical expertise. For over 20 years, she’s been exploring body, breath, and being through yoga asana, spiritual philosophy, neuroscience, anatomy, somatic healing, and more.

In 2018, after a decade of teaching, Alison founded Kanda School because she saw a great need for education and in-depth study to support her students’ love of asana practice. Kanda sits at the intersection of different disciplines, blending traditional yoga asana with movement science, functional breathing, somatic healing, and polyvagal theory.

During Covid, when the school went virtual, online courses, an expansive Virtual Library, and the put-practices-in-your-back-pocket 20 Minute Miracles App took root. These offerings continue to grow and thrive along with mentoring, retreats, workshops, and trainings.

Alison has been a presenter at the Bend Yoga Festival. Taught for Central Pacific Medical Center, Charity: Water, Everlane, Tola, and Raphael House. She’s worked with clients at Google, Facebook, Twitter, and UCSF.

Ultimately, Alison uses movement to help you to listen to your body, develop inner knowing, and live with a Connective Perspective.
